    New state of the art Cleanroom completed by WHP for ADC Bio

    The GMP facility to deliver the next generation of anticancer blockbuster ADC drugs

    Production of new anti-cancer drugs at ADC Bio’s North Wales manufacturing plant has been boosted following completion of a new cleanroom facility, designed and built by WHP.

    This forms a key part of ADC Bio’s construction of a new bioconjugation facility at its site in Deeside, North Wales, UK for the commercial production of antibody drug conjugates in response to global customer demand.

    Antibody drug conjugates are a class of emerging biotherapeutics that require a bespoke infrastructure to ensure strict compliance with the highest global regulatory standards.

    WHP, the multi-disciplinary engineering company, was awarded the £5m contract in December 2017, and the new facility – which includes support areas for washing, depyrogenation, thawing and buffer preparation – sees drug manufacturing in a stringently controlled environment, operated under cGMP regulations. This eliminates any risks during antibody modification and conjugation that could support the development of environmentally-borne microbial contaminants.

    WHP’s scope of work covered the design and build, including test and validation of a state-of-the-art containment manufacturing cleanroom within an existing 6,500 sq. m high tech facility, along with new quality control and process development laboratories.

    Auto-cad design work encompassed cleanroom architecture, M&E components and process and critical utilities systems. Also featuring complex zoned HVAC systems to maintain segregation, cleanliness, air pressures, and other environmental controls, the cleanroom facilities have been developed in compliance with MHRA regulations.

    A key feature of the project has been the installation of a bespoke low maintenance toxic waste system, developed by WHP to remove cleanroom waste to a holding tank, where it is transported to an off-site incinerator. This system incorporates dry break couplers to seal off both ends of the pipeline to prevent the possibility of any onsite contamination.

    New D&B Cleanroom contract rockets WHP into space

    The extension of a world-class satellite manufacturing centre that supports the UK space industry, will be boosted by investment in new cleanroom technology provided by multi-disciplinary engineering company WHP.

    The contract will see WHP design and build a 440m2 cleanroom facility at the Disruptive Innovation for Space Centre (DISC) on the Harwell Campus in Didcot, Oxfordshire, where it will accommodate seven satellite production and assembly areas.

    Delivered and run by the Satellite Applications Catapult, an independent innovation and technology company which drives UK economic growth through the exploitation of space, this new addition to the existing DISC facility will be completed in 2019 as part of an investment programme supported by the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP).

    The move will improve the scope of the R&D, manufacturing and testing services available in the UK to support the supply chain involved in the innovation, prototyping and small-scale manufacture of space technologies, including spacecraft and launch vehicles.

    WHP’s solution, which will see the provision of a Class 10,000 (ISO 7) compliant cleanroom developed using 3D BIM modelling techniques to finalise the architecture, M&E components, and process and critical utilities systems, will meet DISC’s requirement for this range of state-of-the-art facilities.

    The cleanrooms will also be intended to offer inbuilt flexibility to accommodate any future requirement for the reconfiguration of the assembly areas, including designing services to allow future movement and designing flexible material and personnel access to multiple cleanrooms.

    Design Contract For UK’s First VMIC Won by WHP

    The development of the UK’s first dedicated Vaccines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (VMIC) has moved a step closer with the contract to design an advanced array of laboratory and production facilities within a ‘cleanroom wrap’ environment being awarded to WHP.

    The multi-disciplinary engineering company has won the design work as part of plans for the specification of versatile new cGMP suites and filling rooms for the VMIC, which is being built in the Oxford area.

    These units will have the capacity to meet Department of Health and Social Care requirements concerning the provision of vaccines in an infectious disease emergency.

    The centre, which has secured £66m of funding from UK Research and Innovation, is being developed through the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) Medicines Manufacturing challenge and is scheduled to open in 2022.

    WHP, which has already completed RIBA Plan of Work 2 covering conceptual design, is utilising 3D BIM modelling to finalise the cleanroom architecture, M&E components, and process and critical utilities systems for a facility that is set to become a national Centre of Excellence.

    Also featuring complex zoned HVAC systems to maintain segregation, cleanliness, air pressures, and other environmental controls, the new laboratory and production facilities will be developed in compliance with MHRA regulations.

    An established Tier 1 supplier to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors, WHP won the contract on the back of its extensive experience and track record in designing, engineering and constructing complex viral vector and vaccine facilities. This includes an in-house design team with the expertise in working with alliance partners to develop comprehensive process engineered design solutions.

    The WHP VMIC team will be leading the design process through to completion, which has included the selection and appointment of project architects Derell Consultants, as well as managing the complete project design and build package.

    Double success for WHP at BVCA annual awards

    Gateshead-based engineering specialist WHP is celebrating double success in this year’s BVCA Yorkshire & North East Management Team Awards.

    WHP’s successful growth and improved performance earned the company the top award in both the Business Transformation Management Team and Growth Management Team categories.

    The company’s focus on the delivery of precision engineered solutions for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other clean process and manufacturing industries has seen sales grow by 135% over the last two years, achieving significant growth in overseas markets and delivering export sales of £5.5m in 2018.

    Several multi-million-pounds of business has already been secured for 2019 with further opportunities in the final stages of negotiation as the company targets further growth in existing and new market sectors.

    WHP was nominated for the awards by private equity investor Endless LLP, which invested in the business from its Enact SME Fund in September 2016, with subsequent further strengthening of the management team and board.

    In late 2017 WHP moved into a new 26,000 sq. ft. facility on Metro Riverside Park to provide the platform for growth now being demonstrated and more recently has signed a lease on a further large manufacturing facility at the Port of Tyne.

    Success in the BVCA Awards reflects the company’s successful market expansion, which enabled it to increase its workforce to 83 last year and has since risen to over 100.

    WHP’s impressive growth was recognised by the BVCA Award judges in making their decision and who said: “Having set an ambitious turnaround plan including the investment in new single-site facilities in Gateshead, the business has both returned to profitability and substantially grown revenues and order book.”

    As a winners of the regional awards, WHP will now go forward to the national final to be held later this year.

    WHP helping raise money for SHAK

    On the 1st March we held a coffee morning to raise money for SHAK which is a sanctuary based in Northumberland for abused, mistreated and neglected dogs.  Staff were also asked for any unwanted bedding, towels, fleeces, duvets and pillows (non-feather) which are much needed in the cold winter months as well as in summer.

    Staff excelled themselves with the selection of cakes, savouries and treats on offer.

    Gary Kalvic one of WHP’s CAD Engineers, SHAK volunteer and event organiser said “Through the generosity of the WHP employees we managed to raise £204.72, along with loads of bedding, which is fantastic amount which far exceeded anything I imagined.”

    International biomed specialist appoints WHP to deliver key expansion project

    New state of the art cleanroom facilities will enable a leading international gene and cell therapy company to expand its bioprocessing operations and manufacturing capabilities.

    Multi-disciplinary engineering company WHP has secured the design, construction and project management contract for the development of a new viral vector manufacturing centre for Oxford BioMedica.

    The new facility is being established in a former Royal Mail sorting office in Oxford. Phases 1 and 2 of the expansion comprises the highly specialist conversion of the building into GMP cleanroom suites and fill and finish production areas, as well as offices, warehousing and quality control laboratories.

    WHP is responsible for the design and build, including testing and validation which encompasses WHP’s full integrated skillset. The design includes a full 3D BIM model, including clean room architecture, HVAC, M&E and process and critical utilities systems.

    The specialist areas have been designed in full compliance with MHRA regulations and conform to ISO cleanroom standards. This includes the use of zoned HVAC systems to maintain the segregation, cleanliness, air pressures and other environmental controls.

    The WHP team have finalised the detailed design and is commencing construction in accordance with the programme of works.

    London Stock Exchange-listed Oxford BioMedica awarded WHP the contract for the design and installation of the original pilot plant for the LentiVector® delivery platform at its Yarnton premises in 2015.

    As a result of the successful delivery and operation of this initial project, WHP was then appointed for this current, larger and more complex project.

    WHP lands construction agreement to build anti-cancer drug facility

    Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, December 6, 2017: Multi-disciplined engineering specialists, WHP announces signing of partnership agreement with ADC Biotechnology (ADC Bio) to construct an anti-cancer drug manufacturing facility in Deeside, North Wales.

    As the construction partner for ADC Bio, WHP will play a significant role in designing, planning and building the highly-regulated facilities needed to develop the latest generation of anti-cancer blockbuster drugs, Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs).

    Phase 1 of work commences immediately for a purpose-built, dual-stream facility, which will occupy approximately 60% of ADC Bio’s newly-acquired, 6,500m2 space in Deeside.  Planned to be operational in September 2018, the facility will serve clinical and small-scale, commercial production.  Further construction activity is planned post January 2019 as the ADC Bio continues its expansion and adds more capacity for large-scale clinical, commercial and potential dosage-form production.

    WHP increases capacity by moving to larger premises

    WHP has announced its move to larger Gateshead headquarters to enhance its capacity to deliver key milestone projects.

    Located at Riverside House, Metro Riverside Park, the new head office is three times the size of WHP’s previous premises at Staithes, Gateshead and brings together the 80-strong team of in-house planners, designers, programmers, engineers, technical experts and business administration functions under one roof.

    The new site is also home to WHP’s Technical Centre, which is a 20,565-square-feet manufacturing facility and showcase for the high volumes of modular, stainless-steel products and controls that are expertly built, tested, commissioned and validated in-house.

    The move follows WHP’s success in securing a number of notable, blue-chip contracts. This includes the design and build of a critical, cleanroom system for Siemens at Drax Power Station, Yorkshire.  Scheduled for completion in August 2017, the Siemen’s project provides a highly-practical, controlled-maintenance area for planned outages at the Power Station, which supplies seven per cent of the UK’s energy.
